Staying safe in the frigid cold

LANSING, MI--   Residents need to prepare when it comes to dealing with below-zero temperatures.

The Michigan State Police says people need to take the appropriate steps to stay safe during potentially life-threatening temperatures.

Troopers say:

  •  If you must go out wear a warm coat and a hat, mittens or gloves.
  • Watch for signs of frostbite, which include a loss of feeling or the pale appearance of extremities.
  • Watch for signs of hypothermia, which include uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, drowsiness and exhaustion.
  • Check on family, friends and neighbors who may need extra help.
  • Remove clothing if it gets damp or wet.
  • Watch pets closely and keep them indoors when possible.
  • Weather-proof doors and windows to trap heat inside your home.
  • Check on all heating units.  Poorly operating or damaged units can release carbon monoxide, which can kill.
