Health insurance premiums expected to increase

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Many people buying their own health insurance in Michigan could see their premiums rise around 10 percent next year.

State regulators said Monday that dominant insurers Blue Cross Blue Shield and Blue Care Network want to increase rates by an average of 11.3 percent and 9.7 percent in 2016.

More than half of 562,000 Michigan residents covered under individual policies either on or off the federal insurance marketplace have plans through the Blues.

Other big insurers in the individual market are Humana Medical and Priority Health. Humana wants a 4.9 percent premium reduction on average, while Priority seeks a 3.4 percent increase.

The companies' suggested rate increases are composites. Customers renewing their coverage may see bigger or lower increases depending on their plan, where they live and if they smoke.
