FLINT, MI (AP)-- Officials in Flint have announced a program that will employ young people to distribute clean water to families affected by lead in the city's drinking water.
Mayor Karen Weaver's office says families also will get healthy food and nutrition information as part of the Flint WaterWorks initiative.
The program's goal is to provide jobs and opportunities for 100 young people — ages 16-24 — who are not in school and not working. They also will help with Weaver's efforts in removing lead and lead-tainted water service lines in Flint.
It's starting with a $500,000 contribution to the Community Foundation of Greater Flint.
Flint switched from Detroit's water system in 2014 to the Flint River. Corrosive river water caused lead to leach from pipes into some homes.
