Western U.P. reservoir closed due to bacteria

ONTONAGON COUNTY, MI--   The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department has closed the Bond Falls Reservoir to all recreational activities due to health risks.

Officials say surface water samples collected at several Lake Superior beaches and certain inland lakes are indicating high levels of E. coli and/or fecal coliform bacteria.

Recent tests conducted by the health department also found levels that exceed dermal contact limits established by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency at the reservoir.

Upper Peninsula Power Company is advising residents to play it safe and stay away from the reservoir until the health department determines it’s safe.
