Cluster of adenovirus illnesses investigated in central U.P.

MARQUETTE, MI--   Public Health, Delta and Menominee Counties, the Marquette County Health Department, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services are investigating a severe respiratory illness in the central Upper Peninsula.

The adenovirus can cause a cold-like illness, but it can also result in bronchitis and pneumonia. Officials say all six patients confirmed with adenovirus infections are adults who have been hospitalized. Two received intensive care.

Like the flu, adenovirus is spread through coughing, sneezing, and touching common surfaces. Several, but not all, of the ill people reported the Island Resort and Casino in Hannahville as a common exposure. The casino is implementing extra cleaning measures to reduce the possibility of transmission.

Officials say additional reports of illness are being investigated. Tests are being performed to more fully describe the virus.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
