Ribbon-cutting held for new Marquette hospital

Nicole Walton

MARQUETTE, MI--   Officials with Upper Peninsula Health System and local and state leaders gathered in Marquette Friday morning for a ribbon-cutting ceremony honoring the completion of the new UPHS-Marquette hospital.

The 525,000 square-foot hospital boasts 233 beds, the newest technology and single rooms, rather than double-occupancy.

Victor Harrington is Regional Director of Marketing and Business Development. He says the building is the final link in a chain of excellence.

“We know we have great people—our experts. We’ve got good quality scores and indicators. Now we have the facility to tie everything together,” he says.

CEO OF UPHS-Marquette, Brian Sinotte, says, “This is an exciting day for our team and for our community. The construction of this new hospital has been a project more than three years in the making. Its completion both honors our more than century-long legacy of providing quality care in the UP and marks the start of an exciting new chapter in healthcare here. We are delighted to celebrate this milestone and look forward to welcoming our community into our new hospital in the weeks to come.”

The project cost nearly $340 million.

Harrington says hospital staff is in "training mode" right now, learning the layout of the building and their own particular areas. Officials expect the hospital to open June 2.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
