MSP posts across MI collect hundreds of pounds of drugs Saturday

MARQUETTE, MI--   Michigan State Police at the Negaunee Post collected 23 pounds of prescription drugs on National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Saturday. The Calumet Post collected 48 pounds, and the post at Sault Ste. Marie collected 18 pounds.

The event is held in April and October each year. It aims to reduce the amount of unwanted and unused drugs in residents’ medicine cabinets.

The MSP partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration and other agencies to provide a safe and convenient venue to dispose of the prescriptions. All 30 Michigan State Police posts participated in the one-day effort.

Anyone unable to participate on Drug Take-Back Day can surrender their medications at any State Police post, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding holidays. The service is free and anonymous with no questions asked.

Officials say the State of Michigan is using every available tool to combat the opioid epidemic.
