Truck to start delivering fresh food to Sawyer residents in May

Marquette Food Co-op

KI SAWYER, MI--   A grocery truck will go to K.I. Sawyer on a weekly basis starting next month in an effort to combat food insecurity.

The truck will offer budget-friendly, fresh food options every Wednesday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Sawyer Elementary School, starting May 22.

The project is led by Dr. Sabine Martin of CTOR Solutions, which provides services like strategic planning, community outreach and grant writing to mostly small, rural communities. She’s been involved with Sawyer for the past seven years and heard the community wanted better access to fresh, healthy food.

Martin says the project takes a multi-pronged approach.

“The overarching goal of the project is to address and combat food insecurity in KI Sawyer and while doing so improve the community health outcomes and reduce the health inequities that exist,” she says.

The Sawyer Community Alliance is collaborating on the project and is organizing several health-related activities. They include family cooking classes; a gardening “curriculum” for elementary students; gardening learning sessions for adults; and a ten-week prescription food program for some who go to the Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center.

The Marquette Food Co-op will deliver and sell the food.
