First COVID-related deaths in Marquette County

MARQUETTE, MI--   Officials are reporting the first coronavirus-related deaths in Marquette County.

The Marquette County Health Department says one person died Friday. WLUC-TV reports a Republic man who was admitted to UPHS-Marquette April 1 died Sunday. The Health Department says with additional potential cases being evaluated each day, that number is expected to rise.

Officials remind residents that COVID-19 is a serious illness that can lead to death, though most cases are mild. They say it’s imperative that all citizens adhere to all Public Health recommendations to protect the lives of others.

Based on the occurrence of COVID-19 positive cases within Marquette County, it should be assumed the virus is present within your community.

The Health Department says continue to stay at home, wash your hands frequently, clean and disinfect surfaces, cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow if you don’t have one, and maintain social distancing.

The CDC says people who are mildly ill with the coronavirus can recover at home. If you are mildly sick with COVID-19 or think you might have it, do not leave your house. If your symptoms worsen, avoid others and contact your healthcare provider to see if testing is recommended.
