UP health centers get millions to combat the coronavirus

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center is getting more than $907 million to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The money comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and was included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act signed into law on March 27.

The UGL is a private not-for-profit health center that operates nine locations in Houghton, Iron, Marquette, Menominee, and Ontonagon counties.

Dennis Litos is interim CEO of the Michigan Primary Care Association. He says community health centers are testing, helping to stabilize people with chronic conditions, and caring for those who may need medical attention but do not meet the criteria for hospitalization — all under significant financial duress.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
