E. coli detected in St. Marys River water

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI--   The Chippewa County Health Department is telling people to stay out of lower St. Marys River water.

Recent heavy rainfall produced sewage bypasses on both sides of the river. Officials say elevated levels of E. coli bacteria have been detected in the water at Sugar Island Township Park Beach. Residents are also advised to avoid body contact with surface water at 4 Mile Beach.

Health department staff continue to monitor the water for bacteria levels. The public will be notified when the advisory is lifted.
