Bird flu found in Menominee County

MENOMINEE COUNTY, MI— Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza has been found in the Upper Peninsula.

The H5N1 strain of the bird flu was confirmed in a backyard chicken flock in Menominee. It’s the third detection of the virus in the state and the first in the U-P.

HPAI is highly contagious and can be spread from flock to flock through wild birds, through contact with infected poultry, by equipment and on the clothing and shoes of caretakers. The Menominee flock is under quarantine and will be depopulated to prevent further spread of the virus.

H5N1 can cause human infection, but it’s considered to be of low risk to people and public health.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
