Possible bird flu outbreak in Menominee

MENOMINEE, MI— Menominee City Police are reporting a possible outbreak of Avian Flu in the city and surrounding area.

The department has received several reports of sick, dying, and dead birds. Officials warn residents against touching or trying to rescue sick or dead birds. Children and pets should be kept away, as well.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says while the virus primarily affects birds, it can be transmitted to humans. If it is necessary to move a dead bird, use disposable gloves, a disposable mask, a plastic bag or shovel, and wash your hands thoroughly after.

Report any sick, dying, or dead birds to the Menominee Police Department at 906-863-5568, or Menominee County E-911 on the non-emergency line, at 906-863-6614.
