Tips for playing it safe with fireworks

LANSING, MI— The state Fire Marshal is urging Michiganders to stay safe while lighting fireworks this Independence Day.

Kevin Sehlmeyer says 73 percent of fireworks-related injuries and burns happen in the weeks before and after the July 4th holiday.

Officials say to stay safe, residents should follow the manufacturer’s directions; designate a safe perimeter at least 25 feet away from people, houses, dry areas, and flammable materials; light fireworks one at a time, and then immediately back away to a safe distance; and put all used fireworks in a bucket of water before discarding them in a trash can to reduce your chance of starting a fire.

A list of legal consumer fireworks, legal low-impact fireworks, and novelties is here.
