Some UP crows infected with West Nile Virus

MARQUETTE, MI— The West Nile Virus has been detected in Upper Peninsula crows.

The Marquette County Health Department issued a press release Tuesday saying a bird recently tested positive for the virus. On Wednesday, Public Health, Delta & Menominee Counties and the LMAS District Health Department said crows from Luce and Delta counties have tested positive, as well.

West Nile has been detected in the U.P. in previous years. Health officials say the recent detections serve as a reminder to residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

Symptoms of the virus include fever, headaches, body aches, and sometimes a skin rash and swollen glands.

Residents are advised to wear insect repellant, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outside, and empty water from mosquito breeding sites like buckets, unused kiddie pools, and old tires.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
