HANCOCK, MI— Copper Shores Community Health Foundation and the Keweenaw Community Foundation played a part in expanding the Rx Kids program to the western Upper Peninsula.

Rx Kids is the nation’s first community-wide prenatal and infant cash prescription program. Expectant parents can apply to receive $1,500 during pregnancy, followed by $500 in monthly payments throughout their child’s first six months of life.

Of the program’s total cost in the U.P., the majority of funding was allocated by a bipartisan agreement through the Michigan Legislature and the remainder covered by public-private partnerships. In Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon Counties, Copper Shores Community Health Foundation and the Keweenaw Community Foundation contributed a combined $150,000 in funding to expand Rx Kids to the region.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
