Kratom causes overdose death in Marquette County

kratom

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI— The Marquette County Health Department is warning the public about overdose risks associated with kratom derivatives, extracts, and concentrates.

An area resident who used legal kratom derivative products recently died of an overdose. Health officials say pure leaf kratom products have a history of safe use for treating pain and as a harm reduction option, but extracts, derivatives, and concentrates pose a significant risk to public health. Some derivative products can be more than 13 times more potent than morphine, they can interfere with prescription medications, such as antidepressants, and they can cause death by respiratory depression.

The Health Department says Naloxone is effective in reversing an overdose caused by kratom and is widely available across Marquette County, free of charge.
