Utility bill help available from SWP

MARQUETTE, MI— The Superior Watershed Partnership has received $1.57 million to help residents with their utility bills.

The money comes through the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s MI Impact grant program. The funding can help with electric, heat, water, and/or waste expenses.

Households with incomes up to 300 percent of the Federal Poverty Level may qualify for assistance. Money is available for the first time for families that fall into the ALICE—or Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed—category. Many U.P. households who have historically earned too much to qualify for traditional state assistance programs may now be able to access the help they need to bridge the gap between paychecks.

More information is available by calling 906-273-2742.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
