United Way VITA program has $200,000 community impact, officials say

MARQUETTE, MI— The United Way of Marquette County says its first Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program was a great success.

More than 100 individuals and families received free tax help from eight IRS-certified volunteers and received approximately $150,206 in tax refunds.

A site in Gwinn and one in Marquette helped households earning $66,000 or less, the elderly, and the disabled.

VITA volunteers provided 603 hours of service, valued at more than $20,000. United Way officials say participants saved over $30,000 in tax preparation fees, bringing the community impact for the program to $200,754.
