Beacon House, Habitat for Humanity exchange land parcels in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI— The Steve Mariucci Family Beacon House and Marquette County Habitat for Humanity have swapped properties, to the benefit of both entities.

They announced the land swap on Wednesday. Beacon House purchased one acre of underutilized parking area from the Upper Peninsula Medical Center. That was exchanged with Habitat for a parcel of land located directly adjacent to Beacon House.

Officials say the innovative partnership ensures that Beacon House will have access to the neighboring property for future growth to better serve patients and families traveling to Marquette for medical care. At the same time, Habitat will gain land that will allow it to build additional affordable homes for local families in need.

Executive Director Deanna Hemmila says Habitat is looking to build seven homes on the property over the next few years.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
