MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette County Health Department is hosting an event that aims to help people better understand the obstacles faced by those who were recently incarcerated.

Health Educator Emily Pratt says the Community Reentry Simulation is a role-playing model. It helps participants learn about and experience some of the problems that those being released from jail experience when they’re reentering the community.

“Just an understanding of those challenges and those stressors and hopefully opportunities to look at ways that we could improve services for individuals in our community that are in that situation.”

Pratt says the simulation is for agencies and service providers from across the Upper Peninsula who come into contact with the recently incarcerated. She hopes the event breaks down some of the stigma surrounding those who have been jailed and creates ways to help them.

The simulation takes place May 21 at 10 a.m. at Marquette-Alger RESA. More information is at 906-315-2630.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
