Hunters can expect fewer deer this season

David Kenyon

MARQUETTE, MI— Hunters can expect to see fewer deer in most of the Upper Peninsula this fall.

The Department of Natural Resources says while major die-offs were avoided last winter, deer numbers remain low in many locations, especially along Lake Superior and in the western counties.

The southern portions of the U.P.—especially Menominee, Delta, and Dickinson counties—have consistent populations.

Officials say the big news is the Chronic Wasting Disease Surveillance Zone in Dickinson County has been lifted. One deer tested positive in 2018. Since then, nearly 2,100 deer have been tested but no other animals were positive for CWD.

More information about hunting seasons and regulations is at www.michigan.gov/deer.
