Five-day "quiet period" precedes firearm deer season

LANSING, MI— Michigan’s firearm deer hunting season begins Friday, but right now hunters are in a five-day “quiet period.”

The Department of Natural Resources says it began Sunday and lasts through Thursday. During this time, unless hunting for small game, waterfowl or fur harvesting, it is unlawful to transport or possess a rifle or shotgun with buckshot, slug load, ball load, or cut shell in an area frequented by deer.

Unloaded firearms securely encased or carried in the trunk of a vehicle may be transported to or from a hunting camp.

DNR Law Enforcement officials say these five days create a window of time, just before the opener, when hunters can catch their breath and the woods have a chance to calm.
