Cleanup and power restoration on tap following winter storm

MARQUETTE, MI— Winds gusting as high as 60 miles per hour and wet, heavy snow cut power to thousands of Upper Peninsula residents over the past two days.

Trees and limbs laden with snow fell onto power lines. That caused outages and forced utility crews to work overtime to fix snapped lines.

As of 9:30 Wednesday morning, about 325 UPPCO customers were without power; about 114 We Energies customers had no electricity; dozens of Marquette Board of Light and Power customers were in the dark; the Alger Delta Cooperative reported 214 outages; and Cloverland Electric said 35 customers had no power.

M-553 between Pioneer Road and County Road 480 was closed for several hours yesterday as officials fixed a traffic signal that was blown to the street.

Officials remind residents not to touch downed lines or try to clear any branches near those lines. Report the situation to your local utility.
