Winter storm shuts down much of the UP

MARQUETTE, MI— A major winter storm continues to dump snow on the Upper Peninsula, canceling classes in every school district and closing a number of colleges and universities.

Sixteen inches or more of snow is expected to fall in the higher elevations of Marquette County before the storm is spent. Winds gusting up to 40 mph are predicted for Keweenaw and Northern Houghton counties, which is creating blowing snow and whiteout conditions.

Bay College – Escanaba and Iron Mountain campuses, Finlandia University, and Northern Michigan University are all closed today. That includes evening classes at NMU.

No power outages are reported as of 8 a.m. Thursday.

Police are advising residents to stay off the roads if they don’t have to drive anywhere. Call ahead to make sure scheduled events are still being held.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
