Snow, wind cutting electricity to UP homes

MARQUETTE, MI— Thousands of Upper Peninsula residents are without power as a late spring snow storm pounds the Western and Central U.P. Monday.

Here are the reported outages in the Upper Peninsula as of 10:30 a.m. EDT:

Wet, heavy snow is expected to continue into Tuesday morning and winds in the Keweenaw are gusting up to 55 miles per hour. That’s expected to bring small trees and branches down onto power lines.

Utility officials remind residents never to touch a downed power line or clear branches away from one. Always consider a downed line to be energized.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
