UPPCO warning customers about potential for outages, downed power lines

MARQUETTE, MI— Upper Peninsula Power Company is urging residents to be safe during the latest spring storm.

Heavy, wet snow and up to a half-inch of ice are forecast for most of the U.P. through Sunday night. UPPCO says power outages, tree damage, and dangerous travel conditions could result from this weather pattern.

UPPCO says it’s monitoring conditions. Crews are prepared to respond to outages, and additional standby crews have been contacted.

Never approach or touch downed power lines or trees and tree branches that are leaning on or are in contact with power lines or service drops, officials say.

“Downed power lines may be energized, even if your power is out, and can seriously harm or kill you if contacted. It’s also important to be mindful of portable generator safety when using them during power outages. Additional tips for staying safe during inclement weather can be found at uppco.com/safety,” says Dan Freeborn, UPPCO’s Manager of Communications & External Affairs.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
