2-day blizzard breaks snowfall records

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI— Upper Peninsula road commissions continue to clear state trunklines and side roads of record-breaking snow, following this week’s historic blizzard.

Negaunee Township’s two-day snowfall total of 36.3 inches broke the previous record of 31.9 inches, set on March 13 and 14 in 1997. The township also blew past the one-day snowfall record of 7.7 inches, set in 2013. The National Weather Service says 21.7 inches fell in the area on Monday.

The NWS says 3-4 feet of snow fell over the higher elevations of northern Baraga, Marquette, and Alger Counties. Snowfall measurements were extremely challenging as wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph resulted in blowing and drifting snow, with drifts several feet high reported.

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service said it was nearly the snowiest seven-day stretch in the office's history.
