Marquette takes steps toward electric vehicle readiness

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission Monday night approved a letter of commitment to the EV Smart Communities program.

The program is designed to provide municipalities with a roadmap to electric vehicle readiness, including securing funding and getting projects off the ground.

Program officials will pick 25 communities to participate, half of which will be rural. Those that are chosen will receive technical assistance, help with securing state and federal funding, and partnership development with local electric utilities and other private partners.

Mayor pro tem Cody Mayer noted major automakers like Ford and General Motors are planning to make all their vehicles electric by 2030.

“With the current amount of state and federal funding that’s… grant funding that’s possibly available for EV adoption, being at the forefront of that and being proactive I think is a really smart move for us to be doing.”

The EV Smart Communities program is funded by General Motors’ Climate Equity Fund.
