Silver River bridge retaining wall falls

EAGLE HARBOR, MI— A Keweenaw County bridge is closed, after its retaining wall failed Saturday night.

M-26 is closed and detoured at the Silver River between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor. The bridge has had one lane closed since fall of 2021 due to the deterioration of one of its historic stone retaining walls. The Michigan Department of Transportation has been monitoring the movement of the wall since then.

Traffic will be detoured via a posted route on US-41. The M-26 closure will be just west of the western entrance to Brockway Drive, about 10 miles from Copper Harbor.

The Silver Lake bridge was scheduled to close Tuesday for replacement. The project is expected to take about 10 weeks.
