EAGLE HARBOR, MI— A detour of M-26 in the Keweenaw will be lifted Friday.
The Michigan Department of Transportation says M-26 between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor will reopen a week earlier than originally planned.
The road was closed in late April when a retaining wall of the bridge over the Silver River failed. A $2.9 million project to replace the bridge had already been scheduled for this summer.
With a new bridge deck poured, the span can be opened to one lane of traffic while work is finished.
The roadway section of the new bridge will be wider, including 12-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders. Officials expect it to be completed by the end of July.
