Grants to improve streets and other infrastructure headed to UP towns

LANSING, MI— Municipalities and a transit system in four U.P. counties are getting more than $1.3 million in funding from the Michigan Shared Streets and Spaces Grant program.

The program supports quick-build projects that improve plazas, sidewalks, curbs, streets, bus stops, parking areas, and other public spaces in support of public health, safe mobility, and strengthened commerce.

  • The City of Escanaba is getting $200,000 for the Ludington Complete Street project.
  • Houghton will receive $200,000 for improvements to Bridgeview Park.
  • The City of Hancock is getting $200,000 for an Elevation Street sidewalk connector.
  • Caspian will get $200,000 to make improvements to the Apple Blossom Trail.
  • The City of Iron River has been allotted $200,000 for replacement of the Apple Blossom trail boardwalk.
  • The Marquette County Transit Authority has been awarded $196,753 for a school, park, and transit connection at KI Sawyer.
  • The City of Negaunee is getting $200,000 for Phase 2 of its Downtown Enhancement Project.

The program is administered by the Michigan Department of Transportation in partnership with the Michigan Office of Future Mobility and Electrification. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
