Negaunee wins award for its Downtown Enhancement Project

NEGAUNEE, MI— The City of Negaunee has won this year’s Michigan Municipal League Community Excellence Award.

The CEA was developed in 2007 to recognize innovative placemaking projects and programs across the state. Finalists are determined by a small voting board, and they compete at the League’s convention, where attendees vote for their favorite project.

Negaunee won for its Downtown Enhancement Project, which revitalized a neglected and dilapidated downtown commercial area. In addition to replacing aging water, sewer, and electric infrastructure, Negaunee's downtown now features wider sidewalks, benches, bike racks, and attractive landscaping, as well as Iron Town Plaza, a new pedestrian area.

The other three finalists for the award were Hart, Milford, and Roscommon.

A trophy was presented to Negaunee officials last Friday at a convention in Grand Rapids.
