City of Marquette adopts infrastructure plan for pedestrians/micromobility devices

MARQUETTE, MI— The Marquette City Commission has approved an Active Transportation Plan for the city.

A state grant was used to hire a design firm to help the city plan for transportation and micromobility infrastructure. City officials said increased traffic on existing bike paths from both pedestrians and a surge in the usage of e-bikes and various forms of electric devices led to the plan.

Deputy City Manager Sean Hobbins says the city was able to incorporate into the design public input submitted online and from workshops held last May.

“We had a lot of public feedback over those two days. We really did go out and try and meet the community where they were to get that feedback. Not just the people that, you know, that were out and about using it, but we tried to catch a large opinion of all potential users or people who experience bike path or street path traffic.”

Officials say the transportation plan gives the city a manual of roadway and path options when engaging in capital improvement planning. It also provides a basis to be competitive for funding opportunities.
