Rain and snow melt causing problems with UP roads and sewers

flooding sign

UNDATED— Spring flooding is affecting the infrastructure of several Upper Peninsula counties right now.

Escanaba officials say the wastewater plant is running at full capacity. They’re asking people to stop directing the flow of sump pumps into the sanitary sewer and to channel it outside. The sewer system is overwhelmed south of 20th Avenue South.

The city of Wakefield’s sewer collection system is also overwhelmed. Overflow at a cemetery has been brought under control, but officials continue to deal with discharge impacts at the Main Lift Station. The discharge is entering the city’s stormwater system, which connects to Planter Creek. Wakefield officials say the proper regulatory agencies have been notified.

And several roads in Menominee County are closed to through traffic due to flooding. They are:

  • County Road 380 between US-41 and Old US-41.
  • Old US-41, a half mile north and a half mile south of County Road 380.
  • Quarry Road between Spur Road and Trail Crossing.
  • Gustafson Road, a quarter mile north of County Road 577.
  • Townline Road (Kell Road), 1 mile north of Spring Green Road.
  • Township Line Road (Wilson), 1.4 miles north of Old US-2.
