LANSING, MI (AP)-- State conservation officers will step up enforcement of snowmobile noise limits this winter.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says its officers will focus on trail systems that the agency manages, along with areas that get high use or have drawn complaints.
The DNR says failure to uphold the rules could damage Michigan's nationally recognized trail system by discouraging partnerships between the state and private landowners. About half of the state's trails pass through private property.
Fines of up to $250 can be imposed for snowmobile sound level violations.
Michigan law requires that mufflers be in good working order. For a stationary snowmobile manufactured after July 1, 1980, and sold or offered for sale in Michigan, the noise limit is 88 decibels at 13.1 feet.
