MARQUETTE, MI (AP)-- A $1.6 million renovation project at the Marquette County Jail is on schedule to be completed by early summer.
The Mining Journal reports that the work on the 40-year-old jail is designed to ensure safety of staff and inmates.
Undersheriff Mike Klein says the building has not had any renovations since it was built in 1976.
The update includes making cell doors open outward instead of into the cell. Klein says that reduces the risk of inmates barricading themselves inside. Electronic locks also are being installed.
Other updates include improved cameras and an updated fire alarm system.
Construction began in October. The sheriff's office has used the newly renovated Marquette County Community Corrections Detention Center in Chocolay Township to house displaced inmates.
