U.P. schools receive MSP safety grants

MARQUETTE, MI--   Nine Upper Peninsula schools and districts have received grants from the Michigan State Police to support school safety initiatives. 

The Competitive School Safety Grant Program will allow the schools to purchase equipment and/or technology to improve the safety and security of school buildings, students, and staff.

U.P. schools awarded money were:

  • Chassell Township Schools, $32,686
  • Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District, $127,150
  • Ewen?Trout Creek Consolidated School District, $4,045
  • Holy Name Catholic School, $25,995
  • Horizons Alternative High School, $15,694
  • Ironwood Area School District, $64,872
  • L'Anse Area Schools, $25,641
  • Sacred Heart School, $9,067
  • St. Mary's Catholic School, $45,087

A total of about $2 million was given to 25 state school districts, 24 non-public schools, and three charter schools.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
