Suspicious package investigated near state Capitol

LANSING, MI (MPRN)--   Parts of the state Capitol and the Senate Office Building were evacuated Tuesday.

Authorities say there was a questionable package found next to a backpack near a downtown post office, across the street from the Capitol.

The Michigan State Police sent out a robot – which opened and cleared the package – after an explosive detection dog sniffed out a partial hit.

Amber McCann is a spokesperson for Senate Republicans.

“Everybody was let back inside and I understand everything is clear and safe for us.”

The package was discovered during a contentious day at the Legislature. It’s currently working on multiple controversial bills and a large group of protestors were present throughout much of the day.
