Conservation officers locate Detroit-area snowmobilers lost in Baraga County

Undated - A downstate couple is safe after being stranded on an old snowmobile trail in Baraga County. DNR Conservation Officers responded to a call late Thursday night of two snowmobilers stranded in the Three Lakes Area. The snowmobilers – a 52-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man from Farmington Hills – were traveling back to Michigamme on an ungroomed path when they became stuck in a frozen swamp. Conservation Officers Dave Miller and Cole VanOosten were dispatched to the area, and the couple was advised by dispatch to begin walking out the same way they had entered. Miller and VanOosten located the couple about a mile off of Lake Ruth Road and transported them to Baraga County Search and Rescue, who transported them back to their hotel in Michigamme. The husband and wife refused medical treatment. The search and rescue was completed around 4 a.m. Friday.

The DNR encourages anyone planning a snowmobile outing to follow the safety tips available at Michigan.gov/RideRight, as well as to check for any trail closures at Michigan.gov/DNRClosures.
