Holmes Township remains identified as man who walked away from Stephenson facility in 2021

Menominee County Sheriff's Office

MENOMINEE COUNTY, MI— Michigan State Police have identified skeletal remains found in Menominee County in May.

The remains were discovered on residential property in a wooded area of Holmes Township.

State Police say DNA was used to identify the skeleton as that of Robert Cook, Jr., 53, of Iron River. Cook walked away from a Stephenson adult foster care facility in September of 2021. At that time, officials believed he may have hitched a ride out of state.

Cook was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Troopers say no trauma or foul play is suspected.

Cook’s family was notified of the identification in August. His remains were given a proper burial.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
