Planning for Keweenaw County Emergency Operations Center to begin in spring

EAGLE RIVER, MI— Officials in Keweenaw County are outlining how they plan to use a $50,000 Rural Readiness Grant from the state.

Sheriff Curt Pennala says the money from the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity will support initial visioning and planning for a Keweenaw County Emergency Operations Center.

Pennala says the brick-and-mortar center will improve the county’s emergency response capabilities by offering in-person and virtual training for law enforcement personnel and emergency response volunteers, ensuring search and rescue and law enforcement training equipment is properly stored and easily accessible, and providing a space for the county and its partners to coordinate large-scale emergency or public health responses.

The planning process for the center will begin in the spring.
