MARESA alarm summons law enforcement to building

MARQUETTE, MI— Marquette Police are investigating why an alarm went off at Marquette-Alger RESA Tuesday afternoon.

Law enforcement was contacted after the intruder alarm sounded around 4 p.m. The building was immediately put on lockdown according to procedures developed for such a situation.

Police performed a thorough sweep of the building. Staff and visitors were evacuated safely, but no viable threat was identified.

The reason for the alarm going off is still under investigation.

MARESA issued the following statement:

“At Marquette-Alger RESA, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We take all threats seriously and investigate them thoroughly. When a threat is reported, law enforcement is contacted immediately to assist in determining if the threat is credible and to assess the risk to our students and staff. If the threat is deemed to be credible, appropriate steps are taken to protect our students and staff.”

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
