Police, residents looking for missing tortoise in Schoolcraft County

MANISTIQUE, MI— Michigan State Police from the Manistique Outpost are working to locate a missing tortoise.

On Monday, a resident reported that a 30-pound Sulcata tortoise had gone missing between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. It was last seen on County Road 448 near Smith Lake in Schoolcraft County.

Officials say its last known direction of travel is unknown.

The tortoise is a domesticated pet and a non-native species to the Upper Peninsula. The animal is believed to be especially susceptible to the U.P.’s harsh climate and numerous natural predators.

Troopers are asking the public for help in finding the tortoise. Anyone with information regarding its whereabouts is asked to call the Manistique Outpost at 906-341-2102.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
