Suspect in Hancock crimes contacts police, is later found dead

QUINCY TOWNSHIP, MI— The suspect in a series of apparent politically motivated crimes in Hancock has been found dead.

On Monday, the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, along with Hancock City Police, responded to an address on Samson Street in Quincy Township. The Police Department had received a message from an individual at the address who said they wanted to “confess a crime involving an ATV driver within the last 24 hours” and to “send someone to pick me up.”

When police arrived at the scene, they found a 22-year-old man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Through a search warrant, deputies recovered several electronic devices, which will be searched by computer forensic specialists. The four-wheeler used to run over an elderly Hancock man was found, along with clothing the suspect had been wearing during an earlier incident.

The crimes centered on victims who displayed Trump election signs, as well as law enforcement appreciation stickers and flags commonly referred to as “thin blue line” paraphernalia.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Office and Hancock City Police Department do not condone violence against any political candidate.

There is no further threat to the public at this time.

The investigation is ongoing and additional details will be released.

Assisting in the case are Houghton City Police, Michigan State Police, Mercy EMS, the Houghton County Medical Examiner’s Office, and the FBI field office out of Marquette.
