Manistique man's mental health episode prompts police presence

MANISTIQUE, MI— No one was taken into custody after police were called to a Manistique home on Wednesday.

Around 4:16 p.m., Public Safety officers were dispatched to the 100 block of North 4th Street on a report of a man having a mental health episode. Officers closed the road down to vehicle and pedestrian traffic until they could determine further information.

The family indicated the 45-year-old individual was upset with himself, and at one point he grabbed a firearm. The man didn’t threaten anyone specifically. He apparently said if the family called police, he would provoke officers into harming him.

Manistique Public Safety observed the man moving in the house without the firearm. They tried several different ways to speak with him, but couldn’t establish direct communication.

Officers determined in order not to incite a more serious situation, they wouldn’t physically engage the man. They and the family decided to let the subject cope with the episode without any outside provocation.

Police cleared the scene around 7 p.m.
