Assaults on prison staff have increased in Michigan. Union asks state for change.

UNDATED (AP)— A union representing Michigan corrections officers is raising concerns about increased assaults on prison staff.

It claims the state is housing dangerous inmates in lower-security settings.

In 2024, there were 71 assaults at the state's highest-security prisons, up from 44 in 2023. The union blames a lack of maximum-security space, leading to violent inmates being mixed with the general population. They suggest converting some facilities to higher security levels.

The Michigan Department of Corrections hasn't commented.

Advocates argue for addressing root causes of violence rather than just separating inmates. Research suggests long-term isolation may worsen behavior.
