LANSING, MI (AP)— Michigan prison leaders have launched a “Safe Prisons Initiative” to curb rising assaults and improve conditions for inmates and staff.
The Department of Corrections says it is expanding programs for violence prevention and substance use treatment. It is also reviewing segregation needs and training for officers.
New data shows assaults on employees and assaults between prisoners rose in 2025. The plan targets inmate classification, contraband, programming, training, and staffing.
On Wednesday, officials announced they would create more high-security beds at the Macomb Correctional Facility and temporarily close a housing unit at the Chippewa Correctional Facility. Union leaders say inmate housing choices drive safety problems.
