The search for Trenton Massey is called off, pending new information

MARQUETTE, MI— The search for Trenton Massey has been suspended.

In a press release, Marquette Police said search efforts were suspended by law enforcement as of 4 p.m. Wednesday, pending new information.

The 21-year-old Northern Michigan University student went missing early Sunday morning. He was seen on camera footage walking eastbound on the multi-use path. Additional footage caught him walking on the Founder’s Landing Boardwalk, then wandering onto the ice from the north Founder’s Landing Pier and disappearing from the camera view.

Searches were conducted on land, on the ice, from the air, and underwater. Multiple agencies provided resources and assistance, including law enforcement agencies, rescue teams, the U.S. Army, the DNR, K9 search and rescue, MSP divers, the U.S. Coast Guard, NMU, businesses, and hundreds of volunteers.

Investigation of the incident is ongoing by the Marquette Police Department. Officers say volunteer search efforts may continue, but searchers should be mindful of private property and should stay off the ice.

“The Marquette Police Department would like to thank our partner agencies and volunteers for helping us during this unfortunate situation.”

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
