UP towns, health center get state, federal funding

MARQUETTE, MI— Two Upper Peninsula municipalities and a health center have received state and federal funding to enhance services for residents.

The City of Gaastra in Iron County has received about $103,000 through Michigan’s Financially Distressed Cities, Villages and Townships Grant Program. The money will be used to replace water meters.

The Village of Ontonagon was awarded more than $216,000. That grant will also be used to replace water meters.

And $200,000 in federal funding has been awarded to the Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center. It will go toward providing physical and mental health care services in the Lake Linden-Hubbell School District.

Throughout the pandemic, school-based health centers have seen a 73-percent increase in the use of vital mental health services by children and adolescents.
